Liz Truss: sink or swim?

With Suzanne Evans, Tom Peters and David Osland

A ROUND-UP AND REVIEW OF THE WEEK’S BIGGEST NEWS STORIES

In this week’s ‘News Roundtable’ episode, host Chris Wright talks with Suzanne Evans, Former UKIP Party Deputy Chair, Tom Peters, Head of Advocacy at Tax Justice UK, and David Osland, Political Journalist.

The conversation starts with the panel discussing the overall vibe of the Conservative party conference and sharing their opinions on Liz Truss’ performance. They debate whether her promises of significant tax cuts for the wealthy affected her popularity with the membership. They describe the party’s current state and how it seems divided – is this the beginning of the end for the Tory government?

The panel then moves on to debate the recent u-turn on scrapping the 45p top rate of tax, and they analyse the effects of Liz Truss’ tax cut pledges on the economy and the financial markets – is the Prime Minister alienating the public?

The panel shared their opinions on which party would win the next election and debated the possibility of Labour winning the next general election. Will Labour’s typical timid approach be enough to secure their lead?

Finally, the panel discusses the Prime Minister advising King Charles not to attend COP27 – an international climate change summit next month, despite the monarch’s longstanding involvement in environmental advocacy. They debate how this reflects on the government’s net zero targets and whether the monarch should be removed from politics.

All this and much more are debated on this week’s Wright on the Nail!
