Zelensky’s Address, Tory Mayhem & China’s Balloon

With Christina Patterson, Lee Harris, Emily Carver and Jess Barnard

In this week’s ‘News Roundtable’ episode, host Chris Wright is joined by journalist, writer and broadcaster Christina Patterson, political commentator Lee Harris, Conservative Home columnist Emily Carver, and Chair of Young Labour Jess Barnard.

The conversation kicks off with the panel discussing Ukrainian President Zelensky’s address to the British parliament. They debate whether providing tanks, fighter jets and military support to Ukraine will escalate tensions and question whether this poses the risk of it becoming a real war between NATO and Russia. They dive into Zelensky’s gratitude to Boris Johnson and argue whether Boris is undermining Rishi Sunak’s authority. Is Johnson’s support for Zelensky helpful or careerist?

The discussion moves on to Liz Truss’ comeback efforts, arguing whether her fundamental plan was correct, but her execution was botched. They also explore whether she was badly treated and question if she was ever really a credible candidate. Lee Harris questions whether Liz Truss was truly responsible for crashing the UK economy, and the panel speculate on solutions to the current economic turmoil.

The panel dive into the effects of Brexit on the polling and the nation’s “bregret”. They question whether the Conservative Party need to align their views on Brexit and admit its failings to remain in government. They argue whether Boris is a true “brexiteer” and if his referendum success was good for Britain.

Finally, the panel touches upon Lee Anderson’s recent promotion to Deputy Chair of the Conservatives. They debate his ‘anti-woke’ nature, including supporting the death penalty. Is this really a good move for the Tories?

All this and much more debated on this week’s episode!
